Virgin Galactic Spaceport Now Open, is World's First

Image
Virgin Galactic has opened its first commercial spaceport "Spaceport America" in New Mexico. The facility will be able to launch all known types of spacecraft. Fresh off its first successful solo space flight, Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic airline has completed the runway to its first commercial spaceport. “Spaceport America,” in Upham, New Mexico, is now operational. The port includes a two-mile long runway with a thickness of 42 inches, or 3.5 feet. It’s built to support any form of spacecraft currently in existence–a short compatibility list. Virgin CEO Richard Branson: “The last few weeks have been some of the most exciting in Virgin Galactic’s development. Our spaceship is flying beautifully and will soon be making powered flights, propelled by our new hybrid rocket motor, which is also making excellent progress in its own test program. The investment deal with our new partners Aabar has successfully closed, securing funding for the remainder of

Powerloader Light Exo-Suit Adds 40kg of Kick-Power to Your Legs

Image
If this exo-suit is the Powerloader Light, I'm guessing this is the Powerloader. It can increase leg power by 40kg, though at a cost of $223,000, none of us will be kicking someone while wearing it anytime soon.  Panasonic is selling the Powerloader Light for half that price to developers ($111,500), with the request that any research must be presented within the first year. The idea behind it is that it can help with rehabilitation, but when it runs on Linux 2.6 and can be modded both at software and hardware levels, I know what I'd be using it for. Kicking down pinatas and sprinting off with my spoils, yes. Source:[VIA plasticpals ]

Why We Hack: The Benefits of Disobedience

Image
Sometimes disobedience is necessary and good when rules fail us, and it's at the core of why we hack. Hacking is a means of expressing dissatisfaction, confounding the mechanism, and ultimately doing better. Here's why it's so important. Much of today's entertainment focuses on vigilantes, serial killers, and traditionally bad people. The common thread? They all promote disobedience as a virtue. How do you relate to a serial killer like Dexter? You do it because he murders other serial killers—read: bad people . He does something wrong because good behavior won't accomplish what needs to be done. It's this same mentality, this same brand of unrest, that fuels all kinds of disobedience. In particular, it's why we hack. What I Mean When I Say "Hack" Hacking can be defined a few ways, from the more innocent type of life hacking we generally talk about to the darker side of the spectrum where people are actually carrying out highly ill

SpaceShipTwo Makes First Flight with Crew Aboard

Image
That's right, SpaceShipTwo has successfully completed its first flight with a full crew aboard, which "lasted more than six hours and included tests of systems aboard board the spacecraft, according to Virgin Galactic. Video after the break. "There have been several preparation flights during the last month, suggesting the team is preparing for the glide flight even though no date has been released." Guy With Metal Detector Finds $1 Million in Roman Coins

Image
Considering how thrilled I was just to find this story, I can only imagine the delirious, all-consuming excitement felt by Dave Crisp, a British hospital chef, when his metal detector uncovered this pot of 52,000 Roman coins. Crisp was lolling with his detector in a field in southwestern England when he made the discovery, eventually unearthing some 50,000 silver and bronze coins dating from 253 to 293 AD. Over 700 of them bear the face of Marcus Aurelius Carausius, a Roman general who ruled Britain and was the first to make coins in the region. Crisp, a self-described "metal detectorist," explained that he would have to share the coins' estimated $1 million value with the farmer who owns the land on which they were buried. Still, I imagine that the prospect of a $500,000 payday will be enough to inspire a whole new generation of detectorists. Source: CNN

Samsung's 'tank-like,' AMOLED-screened TL500 compact camera reviewed

Image
Another player has entered the high-end compact camera fold, and this time it looks like Samsung is in it to win it. The TL500 (aka EX1) is a 10 megapixel shooter with a larger than usual 1/1.7-inch CCD backing up a 24 - 72mm 3x zoom lens that will take you all the way down to F1.8. In the Photography Blog review, that lens earned the camera one of its few criticisms, starting very wide but not offering enough magnification on the other end of the scale. A lack of 720p video recording is another bummer, but other than those two it's basically all positive, with the build quality and controls earning high marks, and the resulting images (helped by full manual exposure controls) looking as good as you'd expect. The camera isn't particularly reasonable at $449, but it does at least deliver on everything it promises.  Source: [via engadget ]

TRANSFORMER Robo by Chinese Students..

Image
This giant Transformer Robo was designed and made by the Students of   China Central Academy of Fine Arts. It stands at 32 feet-tall, and weighs in at a staggering 4 tons! Incredibly, it’s almost entirely made from parts from an useless old truck made useful by these students. Other than some parts on his face and the sword, everything else is recycled truck junk. The design is not inspired by the Transformers (movie) but based on the Chinese  deity   Guan Gong . To be frank I don't find any resemblance of any human being, but seems like the hereditary of the Transformer grand son.  This is the old truck used for the erection of this huge Robo. I don't it costs more than $20 bucks... Anyway appreciate the all students for the beautiful work who took part in the erection of the statue. Source [via tech ]

Out of this world: Hubble celebrates its 20th birthday with amazing pictures of a turbulent cosmic tower

Image
This stunning image is not from some artist's science fiction fantasy but was taken by Nasa's Hubble Space Telescope. For 20 years it has been peering into deep space and this image was released today to celebrate its birthday. Taken earlier this year the picture captures the chaotic activity atop a three-light-year-tall pillar of gas and dust that is being eaten away by the brilliant light from nearby bright stars. Look at the clarity and the closeness of each picture where we can see every particle very clear. These two images of Carina Nebula show observations taken in visible and in infrared light by Hubble reveal dramatically different views. The one on the right reveals the stars behind the nebula's wall of hydrogen laced wtih dust The image of Carina Nebula resembles this 1995 image taken by Hubble which was dubbed the 'Pillars of Creation' and has become one of its most famous images. Located at the heart of the Eagle Nebula, the Pillars are gas
